It must be summer; Mill Race Village is open for the season! To the uninitiated, the historic Village is a nineteenth-century jewel in Northville’s crown. Seven buildings, ranging from approximately 1831 to the 1890’s, have carefully been moved from various parts of Northville to the scenic park land on Griswold Street; two more have been meticulously re-constructed with the aid of period photographs and plans. A tenth structure, the 1850’s General Store, is being re-assembled in the Village, having been moved board-by-board from its original Main Street location.
Each Sunday afternoon, from mid-June to mid-October, the buildings are open for public viewing. Costumed docents are on hand to inform visitors about the buildings, their contents, and about Northville’s past. Many weekends, a working blacksmith demonstrates the craft, weavers and rug hookers ply their trades, and an occasional strolling musician may be found. Special events are planned for July 4th and the Victorian Festival.
A visit to the Village is a delightful way to explore the past, take a pleasant stroll, and step back in time. Mill Race Village is open to all, and there is no admission charge. It’s located on Griswold, just east of downtown Northville, between Main Street and Eight Mile Road. The grounds are open daily from sunrise to sunset; the buildings are open on Sunday afternoons from 1:00pm to 4:00pm.

Al Smitley loves history; he also loves baseball. Combine the two, and you have a fascinating presentation about a major event in area history. In “The Great Salem Train Wreck of 1907: Joy & Despair in the Days of an all-Too-Common Tragedy,” Smitley describes how a train full of passengers, most expecting a delightful excursion, instead experienced a dreadful collision with a freight train, killing dozens.
Smitley is known to many as the serious-faced guy at The Northville District Library, and to others as the bare-footed “Toes” on the Northville Eclipse Vintage Base Ball Club. With these varied interests, he has created a lively and informative program, illustrated with slides and spoken media quotes, read by members of the audience. This was originally presented last year, the 100th anniversary of the collision; the program was so popular, dozens were turned away. “It’s really good,” one attendee said. “I feel like I have experienced a live Ken Burns documentary.”
This year’s reprise will be held at the church at Mill Race Village on the evening of July 22 at 7:00 p.m. There is no admission charge, but donations to The Northville Historical Society are greatly appreciated. Seating is limited, so those wishing to attend are prompted to reserve early. For more information, or to make a reservation, call The Northville Historical Society at 248-348-1845.

Presented by the Northville-Novi American Association of University Women (AAUW), this year’s Historical Home Tour features four residential homes and one commercial business (artist’s loft located on the third floor of downtown building). All locations are within walking distance of downtown Northville. Also, this year’s theme is “Downtown Northville: Timeless with a Twist” which coincides with The Downtown Development Authority (DDA) marketing campaign slogan launched last year. The “twist” focuses on the fact that Northville is a Victorian town settled with land grants from John Quincy Adams in 1825 and 1826, however, today, even though the town’s Victorian homes still stand, the turn of the 21st century has ushered in diverse life styles of living as well as a new era of business accommodations.

The name is simple; the idea is simple. In Macy’s “Shop for the Cause” program, shoppers buy a $5 ticket then take their tickets to Macy’s Twelve Oaks on Saturday, September 20. On that day only, savings of 10% to 20% are offered on most merchandise in the store—even that already on sale. Ten percent (10%) can be deducted from furniture and mattresses; 20% can be taken off a wide variety of clothing, accessories, and home goods. On that same day, Macy’s offers entertainment, special events, and a chance to win a $500 Macy’s shopping spree. And Mill Race Village benefits from the ticket sales.
(Some items must be excluded; the “fine print” is available at point of ticket purchase or on the ticket itself.)

Gang controlled the bootleg liquor business in the Detroit area

period and is presented with a keen sense of humor by Dore

As attendees at Stardust are whisked back to “Rat Pack”-era Vegas, they will enjoy a strolling dinner provided by Rocky’s of Northville, games of chance (including blackjack, craps, poker, roulette and more), live music, dancing and a wedding chapel complete with Elvis. All gaming, food and entertainment are included in the ticket price, and a cash bar will be available. Celebrating its 20th year,
this popular event features over 100 artists in all mediums of fine
art, lively music throughout the festival, and concessions.
Over 20,000 people will take in the sights and sounds at one of
Michigan’s best-juried shows. Sponsored by St. Mary Mercy
Hospital, festival attendees will again be able to paint on a mural–
a fun addition for young and old alike - that will be donated to the
hospital. Patrons will also enjoy the unique boutiques, galleries,
and outdoor dining in downtown Northville. Make plans to bring
your family and friends for a day of art, music, shopping, and
dining.
"Art in the Sun is a great way to kick off summer. You view the work and creativity of the artists, the kids enjoy activities created especially for them, and to have all of it happening in the heart of downtown Northville makes for a perfect weekend.
We are excited to be using the newly redesigned Town Square this year. It will be a great location to meet friends, chat and relax.
We are thrilled to have very talented, new out-of-state artists joining us for the first time this year. There will be something here for everyone, " stated Janet Bloom, Marketing and Events Director at the Northville Chamber of Commerce.
We have some great things happening at Northville's Art in the Sun:
We are using our newly redesigned Town Square area by our downtown clock on East Main Street. It is a great space to relax and take a break. It comes complete with comfortable seating, umbrella tables, a lovely fountain, many planters, Tivoli lighting laced above, and a unique pavilion structure.
During the event, the Town Square has become the center of kid activities. We will have our mural for festival attendees to paint that will be donated to St. Mary Mercy Hospital again this year. Detroit Institute of the Arts will be in force with a membership booth near our information booth at Main and Center, then will also have their resident artists help kids create pinwheels (a free activity for kids) in Town Square. We will also have Gil Durocher, Sand Artist, helping budding artists create masterpieces. A great addition is Radio Disney. They will be onsite from 12-3 on Saturday. From 2-3 they will be doing their D-tour.
